Caltrans will shut down nearly two miles of eastbound Interstate 80 in San Francisco this weekend, blocking the main approach to the Bay Bridge from Friday night through early Monday morning.
What’s closing
The closure affects I-80 eastbound between the 17th Street and 4th Street exits. It begins at 11 p.m. Friday, July 25, and runs until 6 a.m. Monday, July 28 — a 55-hour shutdown, according to Caltrans and KQED. The segment carries traffic directly onto the Bay Bridge toward Oakland and the East Bay.
Caltrans said the closure is for scheduled roadway maintenance but did not release details about the scope of work.
Why it matters
I-80 is one of the busiest corridors in the Bay Area on a normal weekend. With the eastbound lanes closed, traffic will spill onto San Francisco surface streets, hitting the SoMa and Mission Bay neighborhoods hardest. Neither area is built to absorb freeway-level volumes.
Caltrans is urging drivers to use public transit where possible, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. BART and AC Transit both run service between San Francisco and the East Bay.
Detour options
Drivers who must cross to the East Bay can reroute via the Golden Gate Bridge to the north or the San Mateo Bridge to the south. Both add significant distance. Caltrans recommends building in extra travel time if a Bay Bridge crossing is unavoidable.
Eastbound I-80 reopens at 6 a.m. Monday, July 28.
