Rep. Swalwell suspends California governor campaign amid sexual assault allegations
East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell suspended his gubernatorial campaign after several women accused him of sexual assault and harassment, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN. Manhattan prosecutors opened an investigation into one allegation, NBC News reported. Swalwell denies all accusations. Congressional Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Nancy Pelosi, called for him to exit the race and resign from Congress.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Russian Hill home targeted twice in three days
Unknown suspects fired shots toward OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Russian Hill residence early Sunday, the SF Standard reported. SFPD arrested two suspects and seized three firearms. Both face charges for negligent discharge of a firearm. Two days earlier on April 10, a 20-year-old man threw an incendiary device at the same home’s gate and later threatened OpenAI’s Mission Bay headquarters, according to SFPD.
Earthquake series rattles East Bay
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck near San Ramon on the morning of April 12, USGS reported. The quake followed a 3.8 magnitude tremor and more than 30 smaller underground jolts. The epicenter was located 1.9 miles southeast of San Ramon at a depth of 6 miles. BART slowed train service to inspect tracks. No injuries were reported.
Alameda County supervisors vote against ICE detention center at Dublin prison
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution opposing conversion of the closed federal women’s prison FCI Dublin into an immigration detention center or any other correctional facility, KTVU reported. Supervisors David Haubert and Elisa Márquez introduced the resolution. The prison closed in 2024 after numerous allegations that staff sexually abused inmates. ICE and DHS have stated they do not plan to use the facility, according to KTVU. The resolution is symbolic as the federal property lies outside county jurisdiction.
Oakland begins issuing Sunday parking tickets
Oakland switched from warnings to citations for unpaid Sunday parking meter violations starting April 12, KTVU reported. Meters operate from noon to 6 p.m., with Lake Merritt district hours extending to 8 p.m. Expired parking fines start at $64. City officials said the measure aims to increase parking turnover, according to ABC7. Small business owners opposed the change, arguing paid parking will deter customers.
San Francisco awards $3.3 million in neighborhood improvement grants
The city’s Community Challenge Grant program awarded $3.3 million to 25 projects selected from 100 applications, ABC7 reported. Residents and nonprofit organizations received grants to create public spaces, add landscaping and clean up neighborhoods.
