Truck strikes, kills pedestrian in SoMa; ninth traffic death in San Francisco this year

A truck struck and killed a pedestrian in San Francisco’s South of Market district Monday afternoon, and the driver fled the scene before police arrested a suspect. The death marks the ninth traffic fatality in San Francisco this year, according to Mission Local.

The incident

The collision occurred during daylight hours in SoMa, one of the city’s busiest districts. The pedestrian died at the scene. The truck driver left without stopping.

San Francisco police began pursuing the suspect and made an arrest shortly after, ABC7 reported. The driver abandoned the truck and attempted to flee on foot, but the chase was brief, according to the television station. Passengers and an infant were inside the abandoned truck.

Police have not released details about the arrest or the victim’s identity. The investigation continues.

Vision Zero program and statistics

San Francisco adopted its Vision Zero program in 2014 with a goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2024. That deadline has passed, but fatal crashes continue in the city.

Nine deaths in less than four months of 2026 reflects a pace comparable to previous years. SoMa ranks among the most dangerous areas for pedestrians due to wide streets, heavy truck traffic and complex intersections.

SoMa as transportation hub

Thousands of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers cross SoMa daily. The district sits adjacent to the Caltrain transit hub and Muni bus routes. Each fatal crash raises questions about infrastructure safety for residents throughout the region.

What’s next

San Francisco police are investigating the crash and the driver’s flight from the scene. City officials have not commented on whether additional safety measures are planned for the location where the pedestrian died.
