Quiet Lafayette shaken by homicide. Suspect drove in from Chico
Police responded to a Westminster Place residence Saturday at 11:36 a.m. after a report of a suspicious person. Inside, they found a man dead. His identity has not been released. Officers arrested David Prince, 35, of Chico at the scene on suspicion of murder. He is being held at Martinez Detention Facility on $1 million bail. Neighbors told ABC7 the home belonged to a couple who are physicians. Bay Area Telegraph reports Prince has an extensive criminal record spanning multiple counties — vandalism, theft, assault and DUI. Homicides in Lafayette are exceptionally rare. The city recorded none between 2013 and 2023.
Oakland Marathon sets attendance record: 11,000 runners cross the Bay Bridge
The 17th Oakland Marathon drew more than 11,000 participants across five race distances Sunday — a new record. For the first time, the full marathon route crossed the Bay Bridge with a detour onto Yerba Buena Island, making it the only marathon in the country with that course. Ryuji Mano of San Francisco won the men’s race in 2:30:58. Andrea Deutsche of Newcastle took the women’s title in 2:52:56. Rapper P-Lo ran the full marathon. Mistah FAB performed at the finish line. The event raised more than $100,000 for Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation.
Teen dies in e-bike crash in East San Jose
Two teenagers were riding a Magnum Cosmo electric bike along Remington Way Thursday afternoon around 1 p.m. when the bike lost control and went down at the intersection with Allenwood Drive. The rider suffered fatal injuries and died at the hospital. The passenger was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The crash is San Jose’s seventh traffic fatality of 2026 — and the third in a single week. Earlier deaths included a cyclist killed in a hit-and-run on Coleman Avenue and a pedestrian struck on Almaden Expressway.
California gas hits $5.61. The strategic reserve release changed nothing
The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in California reached $5.61 — up 25 cents from last week and nearly a dollar higher than a year ago. The national average stands at $3.88. The Trump administration announced last week it would release 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over four months. So far, markets haven’t responded — WTI crude is trading around $96 a barrel. The war in Iran, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and the planned April shutdown of Valero’s Benicia refinery continue to squeeze California’s fuel supply. Analysts warn prices could top $6 before summer.
Google finishes restoring the legendary Hangar One in Mountain View
Google Planetary Ventures celebrated the completion of Hangar One’s restoration at Moffett Federal Airfield on Friday. Built in 1933 to house the airship USS Macon, the structure is one of the largest freestanding buildings in the world — 8 acres under a single roof. The Navy stripped its outer skin in 2011 after finding toxic PCBs and asbestos; the bare steel frame stood exposed for more than a decade. Under the terms of its 60-year lease with NASA, Google took on the restoration and finished the work in December 2025. The interior is expected to host workspace — similar to the Google office inside the Spruce Goose hangar in Los Angeles.
DHS: FCI Dublin will not become an ICE detention facility
The Department of Homeland Security told KTVU that ICE has no plans to use FCI Dublin for immigration detention. The federal women’s prison in Dublin closed in April 2024 following a sweeping sexual abuse scandal — ten staff members, including the warden, faced criminal charges. After the Trump administration took office, residents feared the 87-acre property off Interstate 580 would be converted into an immigration holding facility. The Dublin City Council voted unanimously against reopening the site in any capacity. Advocates remain skeptical: the same DHS statement referenced an expansion of deportation operations.
BART faces a $376 million shortfall and is betting on November’s ballot
The emergency federal pandemic funds keeping BART afloat run out in 2026. The system projects a $376 million deficit for the next fiscal year and is counting on a regional tax measure headed to voters in November. If approved, the measure would generate roughly $310 million annually starting in 2028. If it fails, BART says it would be forced to close up to 15 stations by July 2027 and cut 60 percent of train service. California has offered a $285 million bridge loan — but BART will only draw on it if the tax passes. Without a new revenue stream, the agency says it cannot repay the debt.
Record-breaking March heat wave fades after a week
Bay Area temperatures soared to historic highs last week. San Francisco hit 86°F — a record that had stood since 1914. Redwood City reached 93°F, setting an all-time March high. The National Weather Service kept a heat advisory in effect through Friday. Temperatures dropped roughly 10 degrees over the weekend. The region is expected to return to typical late-March highs near 60°F by midweek.
