US and Iran Agree to Two-Week Ceasefire
The United States and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire after 40 days of military operations, with Pakistan mediating the agreement. Iran committed to resuming shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while talks for a permanent settlement will begin in Islamabad on Friday. Anti-war activists held a demonstration at San Francisco’s Federal Building on April 7, demanding a general strike on May 1.
San Francisco Mayor Fires 127 City Workers
Mayor Daniel Lurie sent termination notices to employees across 18 departments, including the Department of Public Health and SFPD. The cuts mark the first phase of a plan to eliminate 500 positions and save $100 million amid a $643 million budget deficit, according to city officials. Unions SEIU 1021 and IFPTE Local 21 oppose the layoffs and are promoting Proposition D, which would tax corporations with highly paid CEOs.
GoPro Cuts 23% of Workforce
The San Mateo company will lay off 145 employees from its 631-person workforce through the end of 2026, according to SEC filings. The restructuring will cost between $11.5 million and $15 million. GoPro is preparing to launch a new generation of cameras powered by the GP3 processor.
Alameda County Opposes Converting FCI Dublin Prison to ICE Facility
The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution prohibiting the use of the closed women’s prison FCI Dublin for immigration detention or other correctional purposes. The facility was shuttered in 2024 following a sexual abuse scandal involving guards. The former warden received a six-year sentence. An ICE representative told The Oaklandside the agency is not considering FCI Dublin for its operations.
Nearly 100 Teens Detained at Abandoned San Jose Theater
Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies found minors inside the shuttered Burbank Theater on South Bascom Avenue Friday evening, according to the sheriff’s office. The teenagers had entered the building with alcohol, and some attempted to flee through the roof when police arrived. This marks the fourth break-in at the theater since the start of the year. The building has been closed since 2019.
Cherry Blossom Festival Begins in Japantown
The cherry blossom festival will run in San Francisco April 11-12 and 18-19. Main events take place in Japantown, featuring a parade, taiko drum performances, Japanese cuisine and a marketplace.
