Jury selection concluded in the case against brothers Smiley Martin and Dandrae Martin, both charged in connection with the shooting, FOX40 and CBS Sacramento reported. Opening statements will be followed by witness testimony and presentation of evidence.
The shooting
The attack occurred in the early morning hours of April 3, 2022, in Sacramento’s K Street entertainment district — a stretch of downtown bars and restaurants that was crowded at the time. Six people were killed and 12 sustained gunshot wounds of varying severity. The shooting drew national media coverage and remained one of the deadliest mass casualty incidents in the city’s recent history, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
More than three years passed between the shooting and the start of trial. Opening statements are set for Tuesday in Sacramento County Superior Court.
